The "Seafood Hub" Takes Off
The seafood industry is booming. As many as 700 fishing boats anchored in the harbor of Port Louis this year. The results are encouraging and exports of "Seafood Hub" surpassed the Rs 10.1 billion.

On the other hand, several developers were interested in the project of the Fishermen Investment Trust (FIT) to create two lagoon Powder-d'Or. Both lagoon are known as the "Little Barachois" and "Grand Barachois." The tender exercise for the two projects was completed a few weeks ago. The Little Barachois cover an area of more than 8 hectares, while the Grand Barachois occupy a space of more than 46 hectares.

"The Petit Barachois covers sea area of an extent of 8 Ha 197 m2 together with an adjoining plot of land of an extent of 1 Ha 371 8m2. The Bassin Humbert (Grand Barachois) covers sea area of an approximate extent of 46 Ha 4300 m2 together with an adjoining plot of land of an extent of 5 Ha 00m2. "

The lagoon will be suitable for fish farming because the seabed is sheltered by mangroves. The objectives of this project are multiple. They cover such aspects of fish farming to meet the needs of the tourism market and the general population.

" The FIT is considering joint ventures with prospective investors for the implementation of fish farming/aquaculture activities and/or any other integrated projects, which may include among others, viable tourism or leisure oriented activities such as restaurants, lodge and hotels with light recreational activities ", says the tender document made available to potential developers. The document said that the proposed creation of lagoon should not jeopardize the survival of fishermen. "All projects Should take Into consideration the interest of fishers Should Promote sustainable and integrated development. The FIT HAS year option to lease the lagoon and Adjoining plots of land ", says the document.
