This year the harvest is estimated at 410,000 tons based on a production of 4 million tonnes of cane. For comparison, in 2011, 4.22 million tons were harvested and 435,309 tons of sugar were produced. As the harvest continues to decline year after year, because of climatic conditions and that sugarcane growers abandoning their land increasingly, the country will necessarily import sugar from other countries to meet its orders.
"In the second week of July 1 the first cargo of 25 000 to 27 000 tonnes of raw sugar is expected in the country. Right now, we do the loading in Brazil. "This was said Jean Noël Humbert, President of the Mauritius Sugar Syndicate (MSS).
Jean Noël Humbert has contended that under the rules of export Europe, the country can export sugar with 15% of the value of non-originating sugar. "One can import sugar from Thailand or Brazil.
In Mauritius, given the downward trend of the sugar harvest, it is in our interest to import sugar. Raw sugar we will receive in July will be melted and mixed with the Mauritian sugar. This year for the entire harvest, we hope to import two shipments of 25,000 tons, "stated Jean Noël Humbert.
