Political discussions are in full swing as the list of ministers is being finalized. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has the prerogative to organize his cabinet, in consultation with the designated DPM, Paul Bérenger. The criteria include skills, but also community, caste and regional balances.
Negotiations continue on the eve of the official announcement, and there is no shortage of skills in this new team in power.
The MMM is expected to have eight ministers, with Paul Bérenger as the number two in the government. Among the favourites, Ajay Guness is expected to be the Agro-industry minister, Rajesh Bhagwan should once again be the minister, although the portfolio remains undetermined, while Franco Quirin is expected to be the Sports minister. Jyoti Jeetun, an economist, would be chosen for Economic Planning, Ariane Navarre-Marie for Social Security, and Reza Uteem for Financial Services. The name of Adil Ameer Meea is also being mentioned insistently.
On the Labour side, the choice is more complex. Fabrice David, an environmental engineer, seems an ideal candidate for an ecology portfolio, but Osman Mahomed, who has championed these issues in Parliament, remains a favourite. Highly regarded, the latter is almost guaranteed a ministry.
Shakeel Mohamed is emerging as a safe bet as the government's number three, while Arvin Boolell seems destined for Foreign Affairs and Mahen Gungaparsad for Education. Other names also circulating, such as Nitin Woochit, Navin Ramgoolam's running mate, Kaviraj Sukon, Daneshwar Damry, Michael Sik Yuen, and even Raj Pentiah.
Finally, Ashok Subron and Richard Duval are also expected to be nominated to represent Rezistans ek Alternativ and the New Democrats, respectively.
