New VC Aims to Make UoM Research Hub
The recently appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Mauritius (UoM), professor Ramesh Rughooputh has planned many ambitious projects for the tertiary institution.

His vision is to make the university a focal point for research at both national and international level.

He announced this at the opening ceremony of the second International Conference on Pure and Applied Chemistry (ICPAC) 2012, held on Monday at Flic en Flac. The conference will go on till Friday.

Professor Rughooputh said: “We do not only want research at national level through scientific journals but we also aim to take it to the grass-root level where every person will be able to understand what we are doing and that they can also do it”.

Organised by UoM, the theme for ICPAC is ‘Chemistry: the key to our future’. Eminent personalities including the minister of Tertiary Education Dr Rajesh Jeetah and Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, professor Robert Huber were present on the occasion.

Dr Jeetah encouraged academicians and students to engage in research work which can help to find solutions to problems such as diabetes and tobacco consumption.

“The conference is a good platform where interesting topics will be discussed. Science is becoming increasingly inter-disciplinary. Chemistry is a creative science which plays a crucial role in sustaining our future,” he stated.

Professor Huber who is a biochemist stressed on the importance of chemistry in the daily lives of people. “Chemistry helps us to understand what we can learn from nature,” he said.
