An initiative of the NGO Halley Movement, this free service will offer a green line, the 134, advice by e-mail and instant chat via the portal www.helplinemauritius.org for Mauritians and residents of Rodrigues.
This training includes theoretical and practical sessions and will enable the participants to develop skills in counselling. The topics include the operation of the service, information technology, the service code online advice, ethics, code of conduct, confidentiality and the laws of Mauritius such as the Child Protection Act and Data Protection Act.
Participants were selected after a screening exercise and interviews and are skilled in areas such as counselling, psychology, social work, sociology, among others.
For the workshop, they will also be trained on how to refer cases to competent authorities. They will be exposed to the operating modes of child protection agencies in Mauritius, their roles as advisors, the role of police in child protection, the legal aspect and the laws governing child protection and data. They will also deal with emergencies and manage difficult situations, among other areas.
The NGO Halley Movement launched a national campaign to educate children and youth last month. Workshops and information sessions are currently being conducted in youth centres.
