During the project, six varieties of wheat are being tested to determine which variety would produce higher output and adapt to different growth conditions while being most resistant to parasites and diseases.
The pilot study focused on potential full-scale cultivation of wheat in different agro-climatic conditions present on the island. Three sites were identified namely in St Antoine, Montagne Blanche and Savannah.
The project also analysed whether the wheat quality was of adequate standard for the production of flour for consumption.
According to MRC executive director, Arjoon Sudhoo, harvesting of all six samples is looking promising, but the milling will determine the difference in quality and output and one or two types of the commodity will be selected for larger-scale cultivation.
