The source explained, “For the first time containers in the port have reached the 500,000 mark in comparison to last year’s figures when it capped at 451,000.”
The source further added that a rise of 40 per cent was recorded in trans-shipment, that is, containers coming from outside the island, and an increase of 7 per cent in containers from within the island was recorded.
The increase in the container number is attributed to a proper marketing strategy and efficiency measures put in place by CHCL.
“Infrastructural development is taking place at the port and this development comes at the right time to stimulate the sector. This will have the merit of boosting productivity at the port since we are living in a period where the whole world is feeling the pinch of the global economic meltdown,” the source added.
Questioned on whether 2013 looks hopeful for CHCL, the source stated, “The situation at CHCL has improved a lot. However, the global financial meltdown constitutes a risk since it might adversely affect business and we may feel the pinch.”
The president of Port Louis Maritime Employees Association (PLMEA), Alain Edouard said that productivity has increased during the past four months. “The number of containers uploaded has increased from 15 to 21.2 on average per day and we hope that the positive trend is maintained,” the PLMEA president said.
However, he pointed out that the port is facing problems concerning faulty equipment. “The equipment keeps breaking down every 30 minutes to one hour. There is a lack of manpower to maintain machines and there is a need to look for a trained technical manager,” Edouard concluded.
