MSIRI: Presentation of a Research and Development for 2012-2016

The Mauritius Sugarcane Industry Research Institute (MSIRI) presented a Research and Development Implementation Plan for the period 2012 -2016 under the aegis of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority (MCIA).

This plan focuses on four areas: agriculture, analytical services and consultancy, sustainability and industrial agribusiness cane sugar.

With regard to agriculture, the plan is to increase the productivity of producers through the use of improved varieties and improved cropping systems. Key activities include the development of new improved varieties by conventional breeding and implementation of biotechnology; disease and pest control, the adoption of a new culture, management of weeds, the adoption of mechanization, improving the efficiency of water use, efficient use of fertilizers and the provision of services of agronomy.

Analytical services and consulting designed to provide chemical, biochemical and biological industry, and production systems. The principal activities include the provision of analytical and biological sugar industry, support for sweets, selling varieties of cane MSIRI and advice on international research on sugar.

In that it is the industrial sustainability, the plan aims to ensure and expand existing environmental programs and ensure sustainable energy efficiency by focusing on the use of by-products cane. The main activities include environmental management and land resources, the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies in the factories, the increase in energy by recovering waste bin, and image brand sugar from Mauritius.

Finally, with regard to the agri-business of sugar cane, it is about opportunities, new partnerships with private companies and other institutions to develop new products and commitment to training. MSIRI also pursue research in the framework of ACP sugar research funded by the European Union. This program consists of several elements, including an increase in the productivity of sugar cane with high sucrose and early maturing genotypes, the establishment of an international quarantine for the exchange of genetic material from sugarcane the use of biopesticides for control of white grubs of sugarcane, optimizing phosphorus in sugarcane using ACP sugar producing countries to make effective use of energy resources in the treatment of sugarcane, develop a technology for elimination by incineration of vinasse, bioplastics derived from biomass sugarcane and efficient use of water in the production of sugar.
