The Department of NIC Opens Branch Offices

No more long queues for the steps on the identity card. With the introduction of the new card, the Department of National Identity Card (NIC) is decentralizing. Thus, new offices will be opened in the four corners of the country to enable Mauritius to go pick up their new card in the office of their locality.

According to the Department of the NIC, the officers in charge of this are all currently being finalized. It should be recalled that the introduction of the new identity card cost a little more Rs 1 billion to the government. This card will be available from October. All major Mauritians until December 2014 to begin the process to obtain a new card.

This card will contain the holder's photo and sound identification, sex, date of birth and signature number. There will also be an electronic chip that will store data on marital status, photo, address and fingerprints as well as the'' encoded data ', safely, to avoid any form of fraud.

In addition, the first impression will be issued free of charge. If the card is lost, then the person will have to pay a sum of money to get another. "We are still in discussions with the government. We have not yet made a final decision. Currently, if a person loses his identity card, it must pay Rs 100 to get another, while seniors pay only Rs 50. With the new card, people will have to pay more. Thus, they will take more care to avoid losing their national identity card, "said an officer of the Department of NIC Matinal Monday.

In addition, with this new card, Mauritians can transact online, get the old age pension and do banking.
Since last March, the national identity card is issued at Emmanuel Anquetil Building, ground floor. Previously, it was available only Renga-naden Seeneevassen Building.
