"We have managed to grow wheat in Mauritius" , welcomes the Mauritius Research Council(MRC) has launched a project for the production of wheat in three regions of the island under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Technology. And this Thursday, October 24, the first harvest took place in Petit Merlot in the Midlands region. Wheat was planted on two acres.
Other areas covered by the pilot project are St. Anthony and St. Aubin, with two acres under cultivation of wheat each well. Former converted into livestock farmers have lent a hand to the MRC.
The first phase, launched 18 months ago, as "successful", the second will be next year. This time it is 10 acres that will be put under wheat crop in Petit Merlot, St. Anthony and St. Aubin.
The MRC wishes to encourage small farmers and entrepreneurs to grow wheat - they can buy seeds from this organization. This Thursday at Petit Merlot, Minister Rajesh Jeetah said AREU will, next year, farmers who want to start there.
