The chairman of the U3AM, Armoogum Parsuramen, in an address said old age was that of freedom 'when professional activities have ended and the people concerned have free time available for new blooming, often, to discover talents they completely ignored earlier'.
'This University for the Elderly will not run courses leading to diplomas. It is a concept that offers people of 55 years and above access to training on several subjects for pleasure.'
He said the university recreated the social linkages with the youth and offered stimulating activities for the elderly, not only for discoveries but also for exchanges.
'The focus will be on inter-generation exchanges. The youth will be at the service of their elders to train them in fields they master like the new technologies while the elders will share their knowledge and experience with them,' Parsuramen said.
According to him, the UA3M will struggle against the sad reality of retirement, loneliness and the feeling of inactivity.
The first students of the university start their new life in December 2013.
The chairman of the International Association of Universities for the Elderly, Professor François Vellas, attended the function.
