Employment: an Upturn Shows in 2014

Pradeep Dursun, Acting Director of the Mauritius Employers' Federation, said that the recovery is based on two main pillars, improved global economic conditions and budgetary measures, including the renewal of the Youth Employment Programme (YEP) and the introduction of Dual Apprenticeship Scheme and the Back to Work Scheme for women.

"We are optimistic about growth and job creation. Moreover, early this year, there are many of our members to strengthen their workforce. Holders of employment areas are IT, accounting, finance and insurance.

The education sector also recruits, whether at the level of teachers or non-teaching. Other areas where there are job opportunities but little interest for young people, include the hotel and production, "he said.

For Pradeep Dursun, there is no doubt that the unemployment curve will be reversed this year. The unemployment rate for 2013 was 8.2%.

The optimist is required at the Mauritius Employers' Federation (MEF) in relation to growth and employment. Just as is the case in the private sector, the public sector also recruits. In total, approximately 900 positions will be filled under the Civil Establishment Order. Thus, the number of Police Women Constables increase from 677 to 733, that of the Medical Officers of 681-757, the firefighters of 634 to 710, that of Human Resource Executives from 161 to 202, the Office of Management Assistants 574 636 or that of Confidential Secretaries of 416-450. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the National Coast Guard, the Department of Social Security and the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and welfare are among the institutions that will be expanded.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) published last November, there was 20,000 of which 5,000 young graduates who are unemployed.
