Rs 86 Million to Relocate Hawkers
The Ministry of Local Government has released its calculations. It will cost Rs 86 million to resettle 1,050 street vendors in the capital.

Three sites were identified: North Station, Victoria Station and the back of the LIC building in Port Louis. Gare du Nord was paved and fenced. But it is not covered and do not have public restrooms. The site is currently closed to the street vendors. These can be accessed when the site is completely finished.

This is also the case in the Victoria Station and behind the building of the LIC. Interviewed by Le Matinal at  Thursday, Hervé Aimée, Minister of Local Government, said he actually finished the feasibility study on this project. It has submitted a request for funding from the Ministry of Finance to carry out this project.

The development of three new sites for street merchants will take at least three months, the minister said. While saying at present, the merchants of the capital operate in the informal sector. "That's why we want to regularize their situation so that they can earn a living in the best conditions possible without them being harassed by the authorities. There is certainly the "genuine cases". They work as street vendors to avoid unemployment ", said the Minister of Local Government.

The presence of street merchants in the capital has always been a major headache for municipal and government authorities as well as for law enforcement because their presence in large numbers causing obstructions on the roads. In addition, operating in central vegetable market in Port Louis complain this situation. That is to say, the hawkers should not operate in a radius of 500 meters around the central market. Ministry of Local Government wants to solve this difficult problem.
