Private Television: Seven Companies Interested
The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) studied seven applications of various companies wishing to operate a private television channel in Mauritius. The companies filed their application between December 2013 and January 2014, said Navin Ramgoolam Tuesday April 8th Parliament.

Responding to a question from Rajesh Bhagwan, the Prime Minister argued that some companies have only Mauritian shareholders and others have foreign partners. These chains can disseminate information, but it will first establish some rules and a legal framework to protect the rights of each individual, said the head of government.

At this stage, Navin Ramgoolam would not give the names of these companies. "Negotiations are on-going. It is not appropriate to give details on these companies, " he said. The Prime Minister also announced that the IBA has already approved three channels that will be used by private channels.

While Navin Ramgoolam has given assurances that there will be transparency in the allocation of licenses, the opposition insisted that some members who issue the permits are apolitical.
