The balance of payments has always been in favor of Mauritius for trade in goods between Mauritius and the United States under the preferential agreement of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, a decline has been noted since 2022.
According to available data, Mauritius imported goods worth $49.6 million from the United States in 2020, $78.4 million in 2021, $101.6 million in 2022. For the year ending in June 2022, purchases were $54.8 million and for the fiscal year ending last June, imports were $56.4 million.
In contrast, Mauritius' exports to the United States increased to $242.7 million in 2020, $255.5 million in 2021 and $285.2 million in 2022. For the year ending June 2022, the Sales were $133.2 million and up to $131.3 million for the year to last June.
The decline in exports occurred in the textile and clothing sector and agricultural products due to the slowdown recorded following the end of the pandemic restrictions. They fell 67% compared to 2020 from $88.7 to $30.3 million last June.
Mauritius' imports in the category of chemicals and related products saw further growth last June, with a jump of 96% to $4.6 billion. But this is still far from imports, before the period of restrictions, which were of the order of $8.3 billion.
