As debates over the payment of a 14th month become increasingly intense, employers are being called upon to pay the end-of-year bonus, i.e. the 13th month.
According to the regulations in force, 75% of the amount must be paid no later than 5 working days before December 25, or December 18 for this year, and the remaining balance must be paid no later than the last working day of the year.
However, many employers are not complying with the law. Haniff Peerun, president of the Mauritius Labour Congress, believes that tougher legislation is needed to ensure that employees benefit fully from it.
