The commodity basket cost about Rs4500 in June

The second report of the Price Observatory (PO) was unveiled yesterday and said that prices have remained more or less stable across the country. The commodity basket, which is made up of 60 products, cost from Rs4,113 to Rs4,669 in June. Savanne is the cheapest to shop in while Black River is the most expensive.

The PO compares the price of each commodity across 22 retail outlets in the country to inform consumers about major irregularities. The president of the PO committee, Mr Harris Bhundoo, did not comment on the findings “so as not to give any retail outlet a competitive edge”.

The report shows that the price of the commodity basket in the nine districts is: Black River - Rs4,510, Moka-Rs4,458, Flacq-Rs4,457, Plaines Wilhems-Rs4,390, Riviere du Rempart-Rs4,364, Port Louis-Rs4,361, Grand Port-Rs4,306, Pamplemousses-Rs4,296 and Savanne- Rs4,177.

Mr Bhundoo stated that 25 000 copies of this report will be distributed to consumers in community centres and in Citizen Advice Bureau. The report will also be available on Twitter and Facebook.
