Medical tourism is becoming a fast growing area in Mauritius. Tourism is no longer limited to relaxing stays in hotels, as a growing number of travelers are seeking destinations that combine relaxation with health care or fitness.
According to Nitin Pandea, director of Emerging Sectors at the Board of Investment (BoI), Mauritius has set a target of attracting 100,000 foreign patients by 2020.
Medical tourism is expected to contribute approximately $1 billion to the Mauritian economy.
This year it is expected that 15,000 foreign patients will be coming for treatment. This projection was made in relation to the rate of growth in this sector in recent years.
“The growth is 25 per cent per year. With its strategic location at the crossroads of Africa, Middle East and Asia, Mauritius is positioning itself as a leading provider of medical care to patients coming from different parts of the world,” Pandea said.
According to him, Mauritius provides a suitable alternative to avoid long waiting lists and expensive medical procedures in developed countries.
