Wi-Fi Tender Bid Winner Known On Thursday

The name of the operator who managed to bag the Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) contract should be known by Thursday. This was stated by minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum to The Independent.

This project is in line with the government’s vision to create an Intelligent Mauritius and transform the island into a safe ICT destination. “The Central Informatics Bureau is currently looking into the tender exercise, which is expected to end on Wednesday. The ICT Authority board will receive the recommendations of the successful bidder. This will be ratified in their board meeting and the lucky operator can start the process of installing WiFi networks by Thursday,” stated the minister.

He underlined that the project got delayed since they wanted to make sure there is no interference in the allocation of the tender. “It is the tender committee that will decide the bidder who has the best recommendations,” he added.

In the first phase of the project, the base transmission stations to provide WiFi service will be installed on the premises of the five municipal councils, four district councils and an administrative building in Rodrigues.

This project remains very high on the agenda of the ICT minister. “It is a revolutionary project, which no one proposed earlier. We came up with a reduction in Internet tariffs and installation of 150 computer clubs. We are now proposing the setting up of WiFi zones to ensure that Internet becomes a basic citizen’s right,” he said.
