Secondary Schools Will Be Equipped with WiFi Soon

Various projects are in the pipeline to transform Mauritius into an intelligent island. The installation of Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) in different locations is one of the projects aimed at making the country a preferred ICT destination in the region.

Secondary schools will soon be equipped with WiFi networks so that students can also benefit. The director of E-education at the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Ricaud Auckbur welcomed this move. “Internet is a fantastic resource and it should be used as a paedagogical tool in the learning process in schools,” he said.

ICT minister Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum said that it is a revolutionary project, which will definitely help in making Internet a basic citizen’s right. He appealed to the private sector to help in realising the vision of the government by providing free WiFi zones. “We have also discussed with several private firms through the Joint Economic Council to collaborate in the creation of more WiFi zones and they are willing to do so,” added Chedumbrum.

Some shopping malls such as Bagatelle, Mall of Mauritius and Caudan Waterfront are already equipped with free WiFi corners. Rose Hill transport also offers free WiFi services to their passengers.

The operator, Data Communications Ltd is currently undertaking works to install WiFi networks in 10 different locations, namely the five municipal councils, four district councils and an administrative building in Rodrigues.
