Mauritius Cane Industry Authority Postponed
In reviewing the document from the Ministry of Agro Industry, trade unionists have concluded that the signing of the MoU as part of the commissioning of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority was premature. They requested additional time. But this is only a postponement.

Small grain of sand in the implementation of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority. The first phase, which becomes a reality Thursday, March 22, has not taken place. This is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Faugoo Satish, Minister of Agro Industry and the coalition of unions and union federations covering employees of the six institutions funded by the sugar industry. The ceremony will take place in all likelihood, next week.

"It was only Tuesday morning that I approved a copy of the Ministry of Agro Industry regarding this MOU. On examination, we concluded that some amendments were necessary. In light of this development, it has not been possible to sign the agreement as originally scheduled for Thursday, March 22. We made ??further representations to the Department. We are pleased with the new posture of the Department. A meeting is scheduled this Saturday so that all members of the united front are made aware of these amendments. Our members should receive more than they should have received if the change had not occurred " , says Vishnu Ramasawmy, coordinator.

This united front was established to bring together twenty five unions federations of six institutions which respectively provide a specific service to the sugar industry. These are: the Control Board, the Farmers' Service Corporation, the Mauritius Sugar Authority, the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute, the Mauritius Sugar Terminal Corporation and the Sugar Planters Mechanical Pool Corporation. These institutions are financed by the Global Cess Fund, a fund from a tax imposed on income of farmers per tonne of sugar. Last year, the government passed the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority Act which provides for the creation of the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority which will absorb the six institutions. The agency will be responsible to ensure and promote the sustained development, efficiency and sustainability of the cane industry.

The Mauritius Cane Industry Authority Act was published in the Government Gazette on Monday. Now it only remains to Ministry of Agro-industry and 30 days for its implementation.Employees of the six institutions sugar concerned can accept their integration into the Mauritius Cane Industry Authority or opt for premature retirement .

"There are indeed some points of concern and must be examined with great vigilance and rigor. Some service institutions have conducted promotions before the reform is initiated. We favor the redeployment. In case some employees would opt for a retirement, everything must be done to ensure that this is not to their disadvantage, " says Viren Sungalee, president of the Mauritius Sugar Authority Employees' Union.
