Every child of Standard IV attending a publicly-funded primary school will be provided with a rugged, power efficient children’s laptop over the next three years.
The minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr Vasant Bunwaree stated that it is an innovative measure which will render education more dynamic and interesting.
“It is an extraordinary breakthrough. We have chosen this vital class where other initiatives such as the Enhancement Programme and Sankoré project have also been introduced,” he said.
The education minister underlined that it is a well calculated measure whereby the laptop will enable the child to continue the work which started in school at their homes. Bunwaree highlighted that it is not the same project as the One Laptop per Child programme which was proposed in the government programme 2010-2015 for Lower 6. “The laptops which we will offer to Standard IV children are different. It is a device which will allow students to maintain a link with work undertaken in school and to continue it at home,” he added.
However, the president of the Government Teachers’ Union, Vinod Seegum stated that many similar proposals have been made in the past without being implemented.
