Qualified Skills Shortage in the ICT Sector
The organization meets this Thursday, May 24, 2012 stakeholders of the industry of information technology and communication to review the situation and to adopt appropriate measures.

The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) is facing one of the greatest challenges since it began operation in November 2003. This is a solution to the shortage of skilled labor, a prerequisite to enable Mauritius to make a name in the knowledge economy.

This will be a major theme of a workshop this Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Conference Room, Cyber ??Tower 1, Ebene. Other issues related to this phenomenon are enrolled in this workshop. This concerns in particular the gap between academic training received by job seekers and the skills required by employers, many career opportunities for young people in this sector, the outlook for the labor market and needs current and future human resources.

The assessment of the extent of the shortage of qualified skills in the industry of information technology and communication has been made possible by a study commissioned by the HRDC in August and September of last year. The study was undertaken as part of the government program for 2010/2015 whose objective is to make Mauritius a rendezvous of the knowledge economy for the region.

There is a lack of software developers, people who speak French and English, engineers specializing in software, computer network specialists. During the study, employers reported that they are struggling to recruit degree holders Bsc level in engineering, computing, and telecommunications and network. They are not holders of BA in French and English.

The shortage also affects the outsourcing industry (Business Process Outsourcing). Operators no longer find, among others, TV agents, software developers, attendants instructed by customers, accountants, moderators or pagers.

"Academic training provides only a basis for job seekers. To enable them to work within our company, additional training is necessary. This is certainly an investment, but it might well have dispensed with if the academic curriculum was consistent with our need s, "said one operator in the sector.

"The ICT sector can become the most important pillar of our economy and one of the largest employers. It has the potential to reach everyone, "adds, in turn, Kaviraj Sukon Sharma, Project Manager and leader in research and consultation within HRDC.

And for good reason. In recent years, industry information technology and communication has taken up the ranks to become the third pillar of our economy. Its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It employs some 16,000 people and its turnover neighborhood of one billion U.S. dollars.

One consequence of the lack of expertise needed by the workforce in this sector due to the use of professionals from abroad.
