Intercultural Education To Be Implemented
The Cabinet has approved the implementation of an intercultural education in schools, in line with the principles of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

The aim is to integrate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning in order to allow for a more sustainable, economically viable and just society for all.

In this context, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources has initiated a series of measures.

These includes a comprehensive review of the curriculum at Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary levels in the light of developments worldwide and also to take care of our national needs, the integration of the philosophy and values of intercultural education by the Mauritius Institute of Education in the teacher training and curriculum development, the conduct of a study on the situation of Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Understanding at school level and the promotion of an intercultural evaluation in schools by the ‘Centre de Valeurs de l’Océan Indien’ of the Mauritius Institute of Education.

The minister of Education and Human Resources Vasant Bunwaree laid emphasis on the cultures that we inherited. According to him, inter-culturalism is crucial for the preservation of these cultures.

He explained, “We have many cultures in Mauritius but we cannot make them grow on their own. There should be links between the various cultures. By linking the cultures, we will strengthen them.

We will start the programme in schools for children to learn not only their culture but also the culture of others around them.

This will lead students to a better understanding of their friends, thereby creating a mutual respect for each other,” he added.

The director of MIE, Sheela Thancanamootoo said: “this is a very good initiative that the government has taken.
