Mauritius Budget 2013: the Main Points

The Mauritius budget 2013 was presented by Minister Xavier Duval today. The Education, Social and SMEs sector are the main priorities of the 2013 Mauritius budget. It is also the first time that a budget speech started with the ICT sector.

The Main Points of Mauritius Budget 2013

The minimum cost for subscription to high speed internet will decrease from Rs 349 to Rs 200

20,000 touch screen tablets will be offered freely to Form 4 students.

Tax on cigarettes increases by 13%, exercise duty on alcoholic drinks rise from 5% to 15%

To promote sustainable development, an ocean economy will be set up and aspiring students in this field will be awarded scholarship.

The Government will increase the subvention on the Solar Heater Water Scheme to Rs 200 millions to meet the increasing demand.

Companies exporting to Africa will get a Freeport Status. Freeport Zones will be set up in the port and airport.

Government will recruit 25 specialists, 75 doctors.

Entertainment tax will be abolished, a cinema ticket will now cost around Rs 40 less.

Companies will be allowed to finance all Child Day Care Center Project for their CSR program.

Permit fees for Management companies in the offshore sector will be calculated in terms of their turnover.

Registration for first time home buyers is removed.

Rs 12,000 allowance for those interested in a health insurance

ICT

Internet package will start from Rs 200 instead of Rs 380.

Eight new departments will allow payment online

There will be a head in IT department in all Ministries

Cloud computing will be encouraged
