The Indian Food Fair, organised by the Indian Women Association (IWA) attracted many visitors and a huge variety of delicacies from various parts of India.Dosa, idli, tandoori chicken, Maharashtrian food, pani puri, aloo tikki, aloo chat and Indian sweets were among the delicacies displayed.
Apart from the food, another fair for jewellery, cosmetics, textiles, cookware, paintings, herbal care and Mauritian products were also showcased.
The event was held on June 11 at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, Phoenix.
Distinguished personalities such as, First Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, PM’s spouse Veena Ramgoolam, minister of Gender and Equality Sheila Bappoo, minister of Health Maya Hanoomanjee and minister of Social Security Leela Devi Dookhun-Luchoomun were also present.
President of the IWA, Uma Ganapathi said, “The crowd turnout has been very good, more than what we expected. This is mainly because we did our publicity very well; people got to know what we were doing. Also, we are hosting this fair for charity, so whatever we have raised today will go to the Haemophiliac Association of Mauritius and Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity”.
Also present at the event, high commissioner of India, Madhusudan Ganapathi said, “I have seen only two fairs, the one in 2009 and the present one. There’s a lot of vibrancy in the atmosphere. The ultimate objective of the fair is firstly for people to enjoy themselves and second for charity. The speeches were very good in terms of recognition, like it was stated ‘those in need, do need a helping hand’ and I am told this is the motto, subtext of the IWA. This fair also brings India and Mauritius together, an Indo-Mauritian dimension to it and I think that has been achieved”.
