“We have noticed that many people are being more health conscious and are turning towards organic food. However, we need to be sure that the foodstuffs that are being sold are really organic. This legislation will be helpful,” said the minister of Health and Quality of Life, Lormus Bundhoo to The Independent.
He highlighted that in Europe and elsewhere, there is legislation for these products. He stated, “With us at the Ministry of Health, this type of product is considered ‘new’ and nothing has yet been set up to control and audits. The health department, which controls the quality of products offered for sale, can only rely on documents provided by the importer.” He added that they will now go a step further with this new legislation. For the time being all those buying organic food should look for the AB or Ecocert logo.
According to Bundhoo, in the Food Act it is mentioned that on the packets there should be “the name of the food, which shall reflect the true nature of the food contained therein and the label shall mention in particular whether any substance has been added or abstracted from the food; where the food contains edible fat or edible oil, the name of the edible fat or edible oil together with the common name of the animal or vegetable from which such fat or oil is derived.”
“The list of ingredients in the product must be written in English or French and listed in descending order by mass or percentage,” he said.
