Since 2010, they have been asking that their diploma be recognised by Private Secondary Schools Authority (PSSA) and the Tertiary Education Commission.
They will submit a letter to the vice chancellor, Dr Anwar Hussein Subratty, with a request to top up the diploma with more modules, so that it is equivalent to the diploma from the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), and will entitle them to teach Physical Education (PE) in schools.
Afzal Chady, spokesman of the students of Sports Science and Recreational Activities, stated, “The PSSA has not recognised the diploma as being an appropriate qualification for teaching Physical Education, hence is not issuing a teaching license to those who have followed this programme.”
He added, “An officer of the PSSA told us that this diploma course from the University of Mauritius is not meant for teaching because it lacks pedagogical modules, compared to the MIE diploma.”
